Power banks with built-in cable: what to know before you buy

A bank, usually 5,000–20,000 mAh, with a USB-C cable attached, retractable or stowed in a slot, so no cable is forgotten; the fastest-growing form of 2024–2026. Buyers get two things wrong: the built-in cable is the weakest part, short at 20–70 cm, often rated 3 A (60 W) even on a bank that advertises more, and the hinge or retractor is the part users most often report failing; and a bank whose cable fails is only usable if it also has a free port. Banks of 65 W and up with a built-in cable are filed under laptop banks, so this class is mostly phone banks.

Specs and terms that matter

Cable kind

USB-C to USB-C is the norm; Lightning for iPhone 14 and earlier is a legacy option, sometimes as a second cable; a USB-A lead on some models is for charging the bank from old chargers and is input-only.

Cable rating and length

3 A (60 W) or 5 A (100 W and up); the listing rarely says, so the per-cable output in the spec table is the clue. Retractable cables run about 25–70 cm, enough to hold the phone while it charges, not to use it on a desk.

Retractable vs fixed

A retractable cable rewinds into the body and adds 30–60 g; a fixed one stows in a channel. Makers quote pull-cycle ratings in the tens of thousands, a maker’s claim without an independent test; user reports name the mechanism as the usual failure point.

Spare ports

A free USB-C or USB-A port is the fallback if the cable dies and the way to charge a second device; some banks sell the cable as the “fourth device” port.

Output and input

20–30 W per port is typical for the phone class; the combined figure splits between ports. Input through the built-in cable is usually possible (USB-C in and out); check the input watts, since some built-in-cable banks recharge slower than the plain bank of the same size.

Built-in wall plug

Hybrid charger-banks add foldable mains prongs: 30–65 W and 5,000–10,000 mAh only, and bulky in a socket; a 140 W, 20,000 mAh version does not exist.

Capacity and energy

5,000 mAh (18.5 Wh) to 20,000 mAh (74 Wh); all under 100 Wh, so carry-on without approval.

Marks and recalls

UL 2056 for the bank, PSE in Japan. Three models in the CPSC’s September 2025 Anker refund recall (A1647, A1681, A1689) were 22.5–30 W banks of this era; a model check, not a statement about the class.

Before you buy

  • Check the built-in cable’s rating against the bank’s watts: a 3 A cable caps at 60 W whatever the port can do.
  • Look for a spare port, so the bank stays usable if the cable fails and a second device can charge.
  • Check USB-C or Lightning: iPhone 15 and later use USB-C, and Lightning banks are legacy.
  • Read the cable length; 25 cm holds the phone against the bank, 60–70 cm reaches a pocket.
  • Keep the receipt and photograph the serial: warranty refusals for gifts without a receipt and for rubbed-off serials are a documented pattern on this class.
  • Check the model number against the maker’s recall page before buying second-hand or on sale.

Myths and mistakes

  • Built-in does not mean fewer cables for a laptop: a 3 A built-in cable gives 60 W, so the laptop’s own cable still travels.
  • The mechanism is the weak point: retractors and hinges are the part users most often report failing, which is why a spare port matters.
  • A 1 %-per-second drop on the display is a cell or battery-management fault, not a fire about to happen: stop using the bank and claim the warranty.
  • A charger that is also a power bank stays at 65 W and 10,000 mAh; the form does not scale to laptop power.

Questions people ask

Is the built-in cable fast?

Often not: many are 3 A cables, 60 W at most, even on a bank with a 100 W port. The per-cable output in the spec table is the figure; for a phone at 20–30 W it is plenty.

Can I replace the built-in cable if it breaks?

On most banks, no; it is soldered or wound inside. A bank with a spare USB-C port stays usable with any cable, which is the reason to insist on one.

Does the built-in cable also charge the bank?

Usually yes on USB-C to USB-C cables (in and out). A USB-A lead is input-only, and a Lightning cable is output-only.

How long does a retractable cable last?

Makers quote tens of thousands of pulls; no independent test was found, and user reports name the retractor as the usual failure. Pull it straight, let it rewind slowly and keep a spare cable.

Can I fly with a built-in-cable power bank?

Yes, in carry-on: this class is 5,000–20,000 mAh, 18–74 Wh, under the 100 Wh line. ICAO’s addendum applicable from 27 March 2026 says it should not be used or recharged on board, and airlines differ; the airline’s current rule applies.
