Laptop power banks: what to know before you buy
A 20,000–27,000 mAh bank with at least one USB-C port that negotiates USB Power Delivery at 65 W or more; 100 W and 140 W are the common ceilings, and 250–300 W models exist. Buyers get three things wrong: a 74–100 Wh bank is about one charge of a 13-inch laptop and half a charge of a 16-inch one; the laptop’s port, the cable and the bank each cap the speed, so “140 W” on the box rarely reaches the laptop; and the bank’s own input speed decides whether it refills over lunch or overnight.
Specs and terms that matter
Output per port and combined
65, 100 or 140 W on the main USB-C port is the figure that matters; a combined figure such as “165 W” is often 100 W on one port plus 65 W on another, never 165 W to one laptop. Most banks drop the laptop port to a lower profile when a phone is plugged in too.
PD 3.0 vs PD 3.1 EPR
USB PD 3.0 tops out at 100 W (20 V, 5 A). PD 3.1 Extended Power Range adds 28, 36 and 48 V for up to 240 W; 140 W needs the 28 V EPR profile on bank, cable and laptop alike. PPS and AVS are the adjustable-voltage modes for phones and newer laptops.
Cable rating
Any USB-C cable carries 3 A, 60 W at 20 V. Above 60 W the cable must be 5 A e-marked (sold as “100 W”); 140–240 W needs an EPR-marked 5 A cable. A 100 W bank with a thin cable charges a laptop at 60 W, and users with a USB tester often find half their cables are the slow kind.
Input watts (recharge)
65 W input refills a 100 Wh bank in about 2 h, 100–140 W in about 1 h; some banks take two chargers at once. The input rating needs a wall charger and cable that can supply it. A crowd-sourced test of ten laptop banks found a 20-minute lunch recharge returns about 45 Wh at best, because most throttle after 20 minutes at 140 W.
Energy
20,000 mAh is 74 Wh, 24,000–26,000 mAh 86–96 Wh, 27,000 mAh about 100 Wh. Above 100 Wh airline approval is needed, which is why laptop banks cluster at 24,000–27,000 mAh.
Sustained vs peak output
Some banks hold the top figure for five minutes, then throttle on heat; reviews that log the curve show it. Voltage ripple and noise under load separate good electronics from poor ones.
Weight
500–700 g is normal for 25,000 mAh at 140–165 W; the lightest 20,000 mAh banks are about 325 g but at lower watts. A 300 W 27,000 mAh bank is 600–700 g.
Display and ports
A live watts-in and watts-out display is standard here; it shows whether the laptop negotiated 65 or 100 W. Two USB-C and one USB-A is the norm, a third USB-C on 25,000 mAh and up; Bluetooth telemetry on premium models.
Before you buy
- Find the laptop’s draw: a MacBook Air or 13-inch ultrabook 30–65 W, a 14-inch MacBook Pro 70–96 W, a 16-inch MacBook Pro 140 W over its MagSafe 3 cable; most gaming laptops charge from USB-C slowly or not at all.
- Decide between 65 and 100 W: in forum consensus 65 W keeps a MacBook Pro working under normal load and 100 W keeps it charging under load.
- Check the cable in the box: 5 A e-marked for anything above 60 W, EPR-marked for 140 W; buy one if the box does not say.
- Read the input watts and whether the wall charger at home can supply them; 140 W input needs a 140 W charger and an EPR cable.
- Keep the Wh under 100 if the bank will fly: 24,000–27,000 mAh is the usual ceiling, and 30,000 mAh laptop banks need airline approval.
- Weigh it against the charger: a bank that weighs more than the laptop’s charger loses to a charger plus a 10,000 mAh bank in most travel threads.
- Check whether the laptop port holds its output when a phone is plugged in; the per-port figures under load are in the fine print.
- Check the model number against the maker’s recall page and read the warranty term, 12–24 months on this class.
Myths and mistakes
- A 140 W bank does not charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro at 140 W over USB-C: that speed uses the MagSafe 3 cable, USB-C stays at the 100 W PD 3.0 ceiling, and the Mac’s own curve falls below 100 W after about 22 minutes anyway.
- A 100 Wh bank does not fully recharge every laptop: about 85 Wh arrives, roughly 1.2 charges of a MacBook Air and 0.8 of a 16-inch Pro.
- A charger that is also a power bank at 140 W and 20,000 mAh does not exist; the hybrids are 65 W and 10,000 mAh, and bulky in a wall socket.
- “165 W” in a title is a combined figure: 100 W on one port and 65 W on another, never 165 W to a laptop.
- Gaming laptops are not laptop-bank territory: most need 180–240 W from a barrel charger, and a 100 W USB-C bank only slows the drain.
- A 3C mark, not a UL mark, is what China’s Civil Aviation Administration has required on domestic flights since 28 June 2025; travellers transiting China report banks without it being confiscated.
Questions people ask
How many watts does my laptop need from a power bank?
30–65 W for thin laptops and a MacBook Air, 96–100 W for 14- and 16-inch pro models, 140 W only for the 16-inch MacBook Pro over its MagSafe 3 cable. A laptop draws what it needs; a 100 W bank on a 45 W laptop runs at 45 W.
Will a 65 W power bank charge a 100 W laptop?
Yes, more slowly; under heavy load the battery may still drain, but the runtime is extended. In forum consensus 65 W keeps a MacBook Pro working under normal load, and 100 W keeps it charging while working.
Which cable do I need for a 100 W or 140 W power bank?
A 5 A e-marked cable (sold as “100 W”) for 65–100 W; a 240 W EPR-marked cable for 140 W. A plain USB-C cable carries 60 W, whatever the bank says.
How much laptop runtime does a 20,000 mAh bank give?
Roughly one full charge of a 13-inch laptop (50–70 Wh battery) and half a charge of a 16-inch one (100 Wh), after 10–15 % losses. A 27,000 mAh bank at about 100 Wh gives about 1.2 charges of a MacBook Air.
Can I fly with a 24,000 or 26,800 mAh laptop power bank?
Yes, in carry-on: both are under 100 Wh (86–99 Wh). A 30,000 mAh bank at 111 Wh needs the airline’s approval, two at most, under the ICAO tiers the FAA and EASA follow. Since 27 March 2026 ICAO’s addendum says the bank should not be used or recharged on board; airlines differ, and the airline’s current rule applies.
How fast does a laptop power bank recharge itself?
About the Wh divided by the input watts: 100 Wh at 65 W in about 2 h, at 140 W in about 1 h, plus the taper at the end. Only with a charger and cable that can supply the input rating.
Does a laptop power bank charge a phone too?
Yes, from its second USB-C or USB-A port. Check whether the laptop port drops its output when both are used; most banks split the total between ports.
