Magnetic power banks: what to know before you buy

A 5,000–10,000 mAh bank with a magnet ring that snaps to an iPhone 12 or later, or to a Qi2 Android phone or one in a magnetic case, and charges wirelessly at 7.5 W (MagSafe-compatible), 15 W (Qi2) or 25 W (Qi2.2, since mid-2025). Buyers get two things wrong: wireless charging turns 20–30 % more of the bank’s energy into heat than a cable, so a 5,000 mAh magnetic bank gives about 0.7–0.9 of a phone charge wirelessly; and “MagSafe compatible” at 7.5 W, Qi2 at 15 W and Qi2.2 at 25 W are three different speeds sold under similar words.

Specs and terms that matter

Wireless standard: Qi, Qi2, Qi2.2

Qi2 is the Wireless Power Consortium’s standard built on Apple’s MagSafe magnet layout, with a Magnetic Power Profile of 15 W. Qi2.2, marketed as “Qi2 25W”, raises that to 25 W from mid-2025. “MagSafe compatible” without a Qi2 logo usually means plain Qi at 7.5 W plus magnets. The WPC logo marks a certified product; “Qi2-compatible” is a marketing phrase.

Wireless watts vs wired watts

Most magnetic banks also have a USB-C port at 20–30 W. The cable is faster and wastes less: Qi2 at 15 W behaves like a 12–15 W wired charge with more heat; Qi2.2 at 25 W holds in the low 20s and tapers, close to a 30 W cable on the newest iPhones in user tests.

Capacity

5,000 mAh (about 18.5 Wh) is one wireless charge of a modern phone; 10,000 mAh (37 Wh) is 1.5–2. Both are far under the 100 Wh airline line.

Thickness and weight

A slim 5,000 mAh bank is 100–130 g and under 13 mm; a 10,000 mAh magnetic bank is 220 g and up and doubles the phone’s thickness. The thin ones cost the most per Wh on the site: buyers pay for the form and the magnet, not the energy.

Magnet strength and kickstand

N52 magnet arrays are the common spec; holding through a case, in a pocket and in a crowd is what reviews test. A fold-out kickstand turns the bank into a stand for video. Strap versions exist for concerts.

Phone compatibility

iPhone 12 and later take 15 W from a Qi2 bank; which phones accept the full 25 W of Qi2.2 depends on the model and its software, and the phone maker’s page is the source. “Qi2 Ready” Android phones have no magnets of their own and need a magnetic case; plain Qi phones get 5–10 W and no magnetic hold.

Pass-through and watch charging

Pass-through (charging the bank and the phone at once) is model-specific and not to be assumed. Some banks add a puck for an Apple Watch.

Active cooling

The newest 25 W banks add a small fan to hold speed; without one, both bank and phone throttle to 5–7.5 W once warm.

Marks and recalls

UL 2056 covers lithium-ion power banks; PSE is required in Japan. Several of the Anker models recalled by the US CPSC in 2025 were MagGo and MagSafe-type banks (A1642 and A1652 among them), so a serial check on the maker’s recall page matters here as elsewhere.

Before you buy

  • Check what the phone actually takes wirelessly: 15 W for iPhone 12–15 over Qi2, 25 W only on the newest models with current software, 15 W for a Pixel or Galaxy in a magnetic case.
  • Look for the WPC Qi2 or Qi2.2 certification logo, not just the word “magnetic”; certification implies foreign-object detection and thermal limits.
  • Read the thickness and weight against the phone: a 5,000 mAh slim bank adds about 120 g, a 10,000 mAh one 220 g and up.
  • Check the wired port and its watts for the times speed matters; 20–30 W USB-C is typical.
  • Read reviews for heat behaviour: whether it drops to 5–7.5 W when warm, and whether it has a fan.
  • Check the model number against the maker’s recall page; several 2024–2025 recalls were magnetic banks.

Myths and mistakes

  • Wireless is not as fast as wired: Qi2 at 15 W is a 12–15 W charge with more heat, and Qi2.2 at 25 W only approaches a 30 W cable on phones that support it.
  • “MagSafe compatible” is not MagSafe speed: without a Qi2 logo it is usually 7.5 W.
  • Magnets and magstripe cards: users report hotel keycards and old magstripe cards failing after a stay next to a magnetic bank or wallet; chip and NFC cards are not affected.
  • A thin 5,000 mAh bank is a day of maps and photos, not a long-haul flight: one wireless charge, less when the phone is warm.
  • Recording video or navigating over 5G while charging magnetically is the fastest way to a heat warning; the cable is the fix when the phone is already warm.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between Qi2 and MagSafe?

Qi2 is the Wireless Power Consortium’s open standard built on Apple’s MagSafe magnet layout, so iPhone 12 and later and Qi2 Android phones all charge from it at 15 W. MagSafe is Apple’s name for its own version. Qi2.2, from mid-2025, raises the ceiling to 25 W; “MagSafe compatible” without a Qi2 logo is usually plain Qi at 7.5 W with a magnet ring.

Will a magnetic power bank work with my Android phone?

Only with a Qi2 phone or a magnetic case. “Qi2 Ready” phones have the electronics but no magnets, so a magnetic case supplies the hold; a plain Qi phone charges at 5–10 W and nothing holds it on.

How many charges does a 5,000 mAh magnetic bank give?

About one full charge of a modern phone wirelessly, slightly more by cable, since wireless charging wastes 20–30 % more energy as heat. A 10,000 mAh bank gives 1.5–2.

Does a magnetic power bank get hot?

Yes; the coil, the phone and the bank all warm up, and both phone and bank throttle, sometimes to 5–7.5 W. The newest 25 W banks add a small fan. When the phone is already warm from video, navigation or 5G, the cable is the way to keep the speed.

Does it work through a phone case?

Through a MagSafe or Qi2 case with its own magnet ring, yes; through a plain case the magnets do not hold and the extra distance cuts the speed.

Can I fly with a magnetic power bank?

Yes: even a 10,000 mAh one is 37 Wh, far under the 100 Wh line, so it goes in carry-on without approval. Since ICAO’s addendum applicable from 27 March 2026 it should not be used or recharged on board, and several airlines banned use during 2025; the airline’s current rule applies.
