Wireless power banks: what to know before you buy

A bank with a Qi charging coil on top that charges a phone laid on it, without magnets. In 2025–2026 it is a shrinking, mostly older class: new wireless banks are nearly all magnetic Qi2, and buyers who expect speed get the worst of both worlds. Buyers get two things wrong: a phone slid off-centre or moved in a bag stops charging or crawls at 5 W; and “15 W wireless” on a non-magnetic pad is usually 10 W for an Android and 7.5 W for an iPhone, since real 15 W needs Qi2 and magnets.

Specs and terms that matter

Qi profile

Qi BPP delivers 5 W, Qi EPP 7.5–15 W depending on the phone; iPhones take 7.5 W on a non-MagSafe pad. Qi2 with magnets is a separate category on this site.

Wired output alongside

Usually 18–22.5 W, some 45 W; the cable is 2–4× faster and 20–30 % more efficient than the pad.

Capacity

10,000 mAh (37 Wh) is typical; 20,000 mAh pads exist. Count on about 30 % fewer charges by pad than by cable from the same bank.

Surface, stand and indicator

An anti-slip surface, a kickstand and a charge-position indicator are what keep the phone in place; without them the coil alignment is guesswork.

Two devices at once

Most charge one device by pad and one by cable; pass-through while the bank itself charges is model-specific.

Testing

Stiftung Warentest’s January 2026 test of 24 banks included induction models and measured induction charging separately; the detailed results sit behind test.de’s paywall.

Before you buy

  • Check the phone has Qi at all: most iPhones since the 8 and most flagship Androids do, many mid-range Androids do not.
  • Accept about 70 % of the cable’s energy by pad, or buy a plain bank.
  • Check the wired port and its watts for when speed matters.
  • Read the wireless watts for the phone at hand, not the headline: 7.5 W for an iPhone on a non-magnetic pad.
  • If the phone is an iPhone 12 or later or a Qi2 Android, look at the magnetic category first.

Myths and mistakes

  • A wireless power bank is not a MagSafe bank: nothing holds the phone, so it has to lie still on a flat surface.
  • Wireless charging in a bag does not work: movement breaks the contact, so the pad is for a desk or a bedside, not the move.
  • Pad and phone both get warm, and the phone throttles; the cable port is the way out.

Questions people ask

How fast does a wireless power bank charge?

5–10 W for most phones and 7.5 W for an iPhone on a non-magnetic pad; a cable from the same bank is 2–4× faster. Real 15 W wireless needs Qi2 and a magnetic alignment.

How many charges do I get by wireless?

About 30 % fewer than by cable from the same bank, since the coil pair wastes 20–30 % more as heat: a 10,000 mAh bank gives roughly one to one and a half charges by pad.

Should I buy a magnetic bank instead?

With an iPhone 12 or later or a Qi2 Android, the magnetic class gives 15–25 W, alignment that holds and a bank that stays on the phone. A non-magnetic pad only makes sense for a phone that has Qi but no magnets and no magnetic case.

Can it charge an earbuds case?

A Qi-enabled case, yes, at 2–5 W, if the bank does not switch off at that low draw; a low-current mode helps.

Can I fly with a wireless power bank?

Yes, in carry-on; 10,000–20,000 mAh is 37–74 Wh, under the 100 Wh line. Since 27 March 2026 ICAO’s addendum says it should not be used or recharged on board; the airline’s current rule applies.
