Per 100 Wh of nominal cell energy: mAh × 3.7 V, or the stated Wh where it agrees within 20 %; power stations by their stated Wh. ~ marks a stated Wh set aside, or a title that names several capacities.
Solar power banks: what to know before you buy
A bank with a small photovoltaic panel glued on, 1–2 W, or 5–7 W on folding four-panel versions, marketed at 20,000–50,000 mAh with torches, compasses and “waterproof” claims. The fact buyers get wrong: the built-in panel cannot meaningfully recharge the bank. A 2 W panel in full sun yields about 1.5 W, a 74 Wh bank needs about 50 sun-hours, and the listings themselves state 26–28 h for a 6,000 mAh unit and 195 sunlit hours for a 30,000 mAh one. This class also has the highest share of fake-mAh listings on the site.
Specs and terms that matter
Panel watts
The panel’s own rating, 1–2 W glued on, 5–7 W folding. A separate 20–30 W folding USB panel is the real off-grid tool; makers’ manuals call the built-in panel “for emergency use only”.
Hours to full from the sun
Where a listing states it honestly: tens of hours for a small bank, hundreds for a big one; 195 sunlit hours for a 30,000 mAh model is about 24 eight-hour days.
USB input watts
How the bank is really charged, often only 10–18 W, so a 20,000 mAh solar bank takes 5–7 h from the wall.
Output watts
Often 10–22.5 W, enough for a phone; rarely PD at 30 W and up.
Capacity, weight and the fake check
A finished bank holds about 50–75 mAh per gram: a “50,000 mAh” solar bank at 400 g cannot be real. Honest 20,000–26,800 mAh solar banks weigh 400–550 g and stay under 100 Wh.
IP rating and torch
The IP rating (IPX4 splash, IP67 immersion) and torch lumens are the features owners use most; “waterproof” without a rating usually means splash-resistant, and uncovered ports corrode.
Safety marks
UL 2056 explicitly covers power banks with an integral photovoltaic panel, so the mark is possible on this class, if rare; CE, UN 38.3 and, in Japan, PSE apply as for any bank.
Before you buy
- Decide what the panel is for: a rugged torch bank with a token panel is a fair buy; a bank that recharges itself in the sun does not exist at this size.
- For real off-grid charging, pair a 20–30 W folding USB panel with an ordinary 10,000–20,000 mAh bank: campers report 30–40 % of a bank per 12 sun-hours from a 25 W panel, charged into the bank rather than straight into the phone.
- Check the weight against the claimed mAh and look for a printed Wh; this class is dominated by no-name listings.
- For a medical device such as an insulin pump or a CGM, plan redundancy: two banks and a panel, tested at home before the trip.
- Check the Wh for flying: real 20,000–26,800 mAh solar banks are under 100 Wh; a real 50,000 mAh one would be 185 Wh and could not fly.
Myths and mistakes
- It does not charge itself in the sun: days to weeks for a full charge, a few percent a day on a backpack.
- “Waterproof” is usually splash-resistant, and the uncovered ports corrode first.
- 50,000 mAh for $25 is impossible: 185 Wh of real cells weigh about a kilogram and cost $60 and up.
- A “solar generator” is a power station with a panel, not a solar bank; the site files it there.
- A phone charging straight from a weak panel throttles and restarts as clouds pass; a bank in between is the fix.
Questions people ask
Will the solar panel keep my phone charged while hiking?
No. A 1–2 W panel on a moving backpack adds a few percent a day; the bank’s stored charge does the work, and the USB input refills it.
What should I buy instead of a solar power bank for camping?
A folding 20–30 W USB panel plus a normal 10,000–20,000 mAh bank for backpacking, or a 300 Wh power station with a 100 W panel for car camping. Charge the bank from the panel, then the devices from the bank.
How long does a solar power bank take to charge from the sun?
26–28 h for a 6,000 mAh unit with a 1.5 W panel and 50–200 h for 25,000–30,000 mAh, in full sun, by the makers’ own figures. From the USB input it is 3–7 h.
Are the mAh claims on solar power banks real?
Often not; this class has the most inflated listings. Weigh it: real cells give 50–75 mAh per gram, so 20,000 mAh should weigh 300 g or more. A printed Wh rating that matches is the other sign.
Is the torch any use?
Yes; the torch, the ruggedness and the IP rating are the honest reasons to buy one. The panel is a backup for an emergency, not a charger.
