Portable power stations, 1,000 Wh class: what to know before you buy
1,000 Wh class. 401–1,200 Wh, typically 1,024–1,056 Wh, 11–13 kg, 1,200–1,800 W AC: the sweet spot in reviews and forums. A fridge for a day, a CPAP for several nights, a UPS for a home office; 1–2 h AC recharge and 200–500 W of solar input. The class where LiFePO4 is the default and the UPS mode is worth checking.
A lithium battery of 256 Wh to 3 kWh and more with an inverter for AC outlets, plus 12 V and USB-C PD outputs and AC, car and solar inputs. Buyers get three things wrong: Wh is how long and W is what it can run, so a 1,000 Wh station with a 600 W inverter cannot start a fridge compressor and a 2,000 W station with 500 Wh runs a kettle for 15 minutes; usable AC energy is 75–85 % of the rated Wh, and the inverter’s idle draw can halve runtime on light loads; and LiFePO4 cells last 3–6× more cycles than NMC, which matters for daily use and not for a shelf.
Specs and terms that matter
Rated Wh vs usable Wh
Model names mislead (a “535” is 512 Wh, “1000” models are 1,024 or 1,056 Wh); the stated Wh is the figure. PCWorld measured 80–83 % of it at AC on a 200 W load (87 % at best) and 71–84 % at 800 W; USB and 12 V outputs waste less. A 1,024 Wh station at 71 % gives about 725 Wh.
AC continuous W vs surge W
The continuous rating must exceed the largest steady load, the surge rating the largest start-up: a fridge runs at 150–250 W and starts at about 1,200 W. “Boost” modes run resistive loads such as kettles above the rating by lowering the voltage. Per-outlet limits are in the fine print.
Pure sine wave
Near-universal above 300 Wh now, and required for CPAP machines, microwaves and anything with a motor or a transformer; a modified sine wave inverter is a sign of a very cheap unit.
Chemistry: LiFePO4 vs NMC
LiFePO4 (LFP) is rated for 3,000 cycles and more to 80 % capacity; NMC or plain Li-ion for 500–800 cycles to 60–80 %. LFP is heavier per Wh and more stable in heat. A reviewer measured 94 % capacity on an LFP station after about 1,100 daily UPS cycles.
UPS or EPS mode
Switches the outlets from mains to battery in 10–20 ms by the makers’ claims, 15 ms in a user’s measurement with a small fridge; enough for routers, PCs and fridges, not a true online UPS. Daily UPS duty consumes about a cycle a day.
Recharge inputs
AC input of 500–2,400 W refills modern LFP units to 80 % in 1–2 h; a car’s 12 V socket gives about 100–120 W and takes 8–20 h; alternator chargers give 500–800 W. Solar input has a maximum W and a voltage window (11–60 V or 11–150 V); the panel’s open-circuit voltage must stay inside it, and cold mornings raise it.
12 V output
The cigarette socket is limited to 10 A, 120 W; a diesel heater needs about 180 W at start and will not run from it. Better units add a 30 A XT60 or Anderson port.
Idle draw and auto-off
With the inverter on, standby draw runs from 1 to 30 W; 3 W is praised in tests. Eco or auto-off timers can cut the output when a fridge cycles off.
Expansion, app and warranty
Expansion batteries are proprietary and cost about the same per Wh as the base unit. Some apps require an account to use every feature; others work offline. Warranties run 2–5 years. UL 2743 is the North American standard for portable power packs with inverters; it replaced UL 1236 for this class from 1 June 2025.
Mains voltage
A station sold for the US is 120 V 60 Hz, for Japan 100 V, for the UK, Europe, Australia and India 230 V 50 Hz; a US-market unit does not run 230 V appliances and vice versa, and the outlet shape (Schuko, BS 1363, AS/NZS 3112) follows the market.
Before you buy
- List the loads in watts and hours: a fridge 150–250 W running and about 1,200 W starting, 0.8–1.2 kWh a day; a CPAP without humidifier, which reviewers put at 30–60 W; router and lights 10–30 W; a kettle, heater or induction hob 1,000–2,000 W.
- Check continuous W against the largest steady load and surge W against the largest start-up, and the per-outlet limits.
- Choose LiFePO4 for daily, UPS, van or solar use; NMC is acceptable for a backup that mostly sits on a shelf.
- For UPS use, check the mode is rated and its switchover time, and whether the fridge or PC rides through 10–20 ms.
- Match the solar input to the panel: maximum W, voltage window and connector (MC4, XT60); a panel outside the window is wasted or harmful.
- Read the idle draw with AC on and whether an auto-off timer can be disabled; both decide how long light loads run.
- Check weight and handles: a 1 kWh LFP station is 11–13 kg, a 2 kWh one 20–30 kg, so wheels matter.
- Check the market voltage and outlet type match the storefront, and the expansion path and warranty length; the brand should be likely to exist in five years.
Myths and mistakes
- 1,000 Wh does not run a fridge for days: a household fridge uses 0.8–1.2 kWh a day and a 12 V compressor cooler about 0.5 kWh, so a day or two.
- Surge watts in a title are not continuous watts; the site’s output column shows the rated AC figure only.
- Expansion batteries are not cheaper per Wh than the base unit, and they are proprietary; a DIY LFP bank costs about a quarter per Wh but needs skills and has no warranty, by a long r/vandwellers debate.
- Most makers advise against leaving a station plugged in permanently; UPS duty is a cycle a day, which is where LFP’s cycle count pays.
- Power stations never fly: every one is over 160 Wh. They ship by ground or travel by car.
- The 12 V socket is the least solved output: 120 W on most units, so a diesel heater or a large 12 V cooler needs the XT60 port or an AC adapter.
Questions people ask
What size power station do I need for a power cut?
300 Wh runs phones, lights and a router for a day. 1,000 Wh adds a fridge for about 12–24 h or a CPAP without humidifier for several nights. 2,000 Wh and up runs a fridge for one to two days or a small heater on low (300 W) overnight; heating loads drain any station fastest.
Can a power station run a microwave, kettle or space heater?
Only a station with a 1,500–2,000 W continuous inverter, and only for a few minutes per 100 Wh: a 1,500 W kettle takes a 1,000 Wh station’s usable energy in about 30 minutes of boiling.
LiFePO4 or NMC?
LiFePO4 for anything used regularly: 3,000 cycles and more to 80 % against 500–800 for NMC, and more stable in heat, at the cost of weight. For a backup that sits charged on a shelf, either; NMC is lighter to carry.
Can I use a power station as a UPS?
If it has a UPS or EPS mode with a switchover of 20 ms or less, yes for routers, PCs and fridges; it is not an online UPS and does not protect sensitive equipment. Every day on UPS duty is about one charge cycle, which is why LFP is the choice.
How fast does a power station recharge?
Modern LFP units refill from the wall in 1–2 h at 500–2,400 W input. From a car socket at 100–120 W it takes 8–20 h; from solar it depends on the panel watts, the sun and the input ceiling.
What solar panel do I need?
One that fits the input’s maximum watts and voltage window, usually with MC4 connectors; about 100 W of panel per 300–500 Wh of daily use in good sun. A 300 Wh station pairs with 60–100 W, a 1,000 Wh one with 200–500 W, a 2,000 Wh one with 800–1,000 W.
Can I fly with a power station?
No. The ICAO tiers that the FAA, EASA and IATA follow stop at 160 Wh, and the smallest stations are 256 Wh. They travel by car or ship by ground as dangerous goods.
How long does a power station last?
An LFP unit 10 years and more at a cycle a day, by its 3,000-cycle rating; an NMC unit 2–3 years of daily cycling, far longer on a shelf. Warranties run 2–5 years.
